I had a split yesterday on three MLB plays. I won with the favourites on the Astros, my underdog play on the Rays lost and the prop bet I picked was a washout in Cleveland.
MLB: White Sox [+125] (Cease) @ Giants (Webb) $
Dylan Cease is coming off a high-quality start over the Orioles and has been showing signs of turning his season around. In his last 3 starts, 18 innings, he has given up just 12 hits, 1 HR and has stuck out 32. His strike out total is really key as that is nearly two strikeouts per inning over that stretch. With stats like that, the White Sox have a chance to win each time out. That makes them particularly attractive on the road as underdogs.
Logan Webb has also been pitching well for SF, but perhaps not as dominant as Cease. This should be a tight low scoring ball game. Games like that often come down to the bullpen where I think the White Sox also have the advantage. I’ll take the underdogs to get a win.
MLB: Yankees [-171] (Cortes) @ Guardians (Civale) $
This is game two of the double hitter.
The Yankees have been crushing everyone and every pitcher this year with the exception of the Astros. This is an opportunity for them to tee off on a sub-par starter in Aaron Civale. His 7.20 ERA and 1.60 whip is less than impressive and if he can avoid being crushed for less than five runs, I’d be surprised.
On the opposite side, Nestor Cortez has been outstanding as a Yankee starter. His numbers fell off slightly in June after a tremendously good start to the season. I expect him to return to early form as the season continues. He obviously benefits from the huge run support of the big bats behind him, so I expect him to stack up the wins in the second half of the season.
The only advantage for Cleveland today is home field, which in MLB is marginal.
