American League Preview & Best Bets – August 3rd, 2022

American League

Tonight’s American League Preview

Yankees (Cole) Vs Mariners (Castillo), 1:05 EST

Luis Castillo makes his Mariner’s debut today and he could not have picked a more tense and difficult situation to do so. Today he faces the best hitting lineup in the American League led by Aaron Judge and his 43 home runs. The Yankees have 564 runs on the season which is significantly better than the next best Blue Jays with 498. The Yankees also sport the best home record in MLB at 41-14 (.745).

The task for the Castillo and the Mariner does not get any easier when you look at New York’s starting pitcher today Gerrit Cole with his 3.30 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. The Yankee’s ace seems in Cy Young contention nearly every year and 2022 is no different.

Castillo was dealt from the Reds to the Mariners just two days ago in a big trade that saw Cincinnatti receive three highly-touted prospects in return. Mariner’s front office appears all-in this year in a move for the club to break their 20 year playoff draught. The trade was a huge vote of confidence for the current squad after their incredible 14 game win streak just prior the All-Star break.

Luis Castillo was having a stellar season for the last place Reds with a 2.87 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. He looks to continue his dominant pitching to lead the Mariners into the playoffs. They currently sit 2 games ahead of Cleveland in the American League wild-card standings.

The Mariners pulled of an exciting come-back win in game two of the series last night. Sam Haggerty had the game winning HR in the 7th inning and the Yankees’ comeback came up short leaving the bases load in the 9th inning. The two two teams will meet again for another three game series in Seattle next Monday.

American League Best Bets

August’s Best Bets: 1-2, -1.26 Units

I got a split yesterday with the Blue Jays getting a nice 3-1 victory in TB. Kevin Gausman pitched a good 8 innings giving up just one run. But Tristan McKenzie let me down for the second straight week by getting in trouble in the first inning giving up a big 3-run blast.

I am going with just one pick today with most of the action in the American League getting early start times today.

American League: Royals (Singer) [+136] Vs White Sox (Lynn) $

I have fading Lance Lynn now for several weeks with some success. The once dominant starter for the White Sox appears to have lost his edge. He was rocked in 4 of his last 5 starts and his ERA has now ballooned to 6.42.

I am not a huge fan of the Royals right now, especially after they were sellers at the deadline and let their best hitter go to New York. But Brady Singer has been solid for KC this year and he is fully capable of coming up with a quality start in this matchup. The Royal’s weakness is clear their run production. But with gas can Lance Lynn on the mound, maybe they can put up 4 or 5 runs today and get a win.
